            Our Mission:

The mission of Initiative for Affordable Housing, Inc. is to provide permanent, affordable housing to homeless and low-income families. Initiative is also committed to providing individualized social services and employment that empower families to reach personal goals and achieve independence.

            Who We Are:

Initiative for Affordable Housing (IAH) is a private, nonprofit 501(c)(3) agency that was founded in 1990 with one house and one family to address the growing problem of homelessness. We operate with the belief that safe, stable housing is essential, and that housing is most successful when we provide
additional resources to strengthen and empower families. A professional staff, numerous volunteers, and a board of community leaders use their skills and passions to make a difference in the lives of homeless and low-income individuals in metro Atlanta.

            What We Do:

Initiative works to reduce homelessness and provide affordable housing through three programs:

            1)  Homeless Services – Since 1990, our unique program design has provided safe, stable housing in concert with social services and financial literacy training for homeless families. With our support for up to two years, families get jobs, earn income, learn life skills and move into their own independent housing.

            2)  Rental Housing – Finding an affordable place to live is difficult for those with low-paying jobs. In 1996, Initiative began to develop safe and attractive housing that low-income families can afford on the income they earn. We manage and rent 355 apartments and 10 single-family houses to low-income families. Our apartment communities offer educational and social activities, and we operate a food co-op to help residents get more for their food dollar through low-cost food distributions.

            3)  re:loom-weaving a better life – The re:loom employment project grew naturally from our work with adults who struggled to secure and maintain jobs. Since 2010, re:loom has helped individuals address obstacles to employment through paid on-site jobs, training and leadership opportunities. Weavers design and produce handmade products and lead a team of weavehouse volunteers. With a stable salary, 100% healthcare coverage, and opportunities to engage in the operation of the weavehouse, employees gain a financial foundation, leadership skills, and a sense of purpose and accomplishment.
Your donations of funds, textiles, household items and time can make a difference in the lives of homeless and struggling families. Please give generously today. All contributions of cash and goods are tax deductible.
